Eating for Energy

Lose Weight with Raw Foods!

Amy Coates, BSc., RHN

In a rut?

Try raw foods for a week!

Fruits and vegetables take a load off your body’s digestive system and promote the break down of gunk that your body has wanted to get rid of for years. It just hasn’t been able to get around to it! Digesting takes energy, and that energy can be better spent cleaning the body! Do yourself a favour and focus on raw fruits, vegetables, smoothies and juices for just one week and your body will transform before your eyes. Couple these dietary changes with regular exercise each day and you will speed up the detoxification process.

For increased weight loss with raw food, focus on vegetable juices and salads and go easy on the fruit. An example menu for your first day would be a green juice in the morning (celery, apple, carrot, kale, ginger) followed by a baby green salad with sprouts, avocado, cucumber, tomato, dulse flakes, and a lemon/olive oil dressing. Zucchini pasta for dinner can be made using a potato peeler to make noodles out of the zucchini. A fresh marinara sauce using basil, carrot, tomatoes (juice briefly squeezed out), a garlic clove, a handful of chopped onions, half an avocado and pepper thrown in the food processor works well tossed over the zucchini noodles.

There are a few rules of thumb when it comes to “going raw”. Eat nothing processed. If it comes in a box or a jar, it has chemicals in the form of flavour enhancers and preservatives and more sodium than your body can handle. Eat only when true hunger arises. Bored? Go for a walk…not to the fridge. Last but not least, make sure you drink plenty of water. Most people are walking around dehydrated. All cellular activity depends on a fluid medium. Simply drinking more water can help you lose weight by increasing cellular activity and therefore bodily metabolism!

The best part of eating raw foods is that you can eat dessert and still lose weight! Simply throwing one banana and a mango in your food processor creates a delicious pudding for two. On another occasion, add a few strawberries to the mango and banana, or a squeeze of lemon. The possibilities are endless. Yummy yummo!
